Scurt istoric

Initially it was just an oncology course within the Chair of Hospital Surgery. Then, in 1976, the Oncology Chair was set up by Vasile Pavliuc, university professor, Doctor Habilitated in Medical Sciences, who led it until 1992. Assistants Nicora Pavel, Godoroja Nadejda, and Moiş Ion also worked at the Chair. In 1983, Dumitru Sofroni joined the staff and in 1989 - Nicolae Ghidirim, Ion Vladanov, Constantin Popescu and Dumitru Carata.

During 1992-1994, university professor Gheorghe Ţâbârnă was chief of Chair.

In 1994, the Oncology Chair was merged with the Hematology Chair, founded in 1991 by Ion Corcimaru, university professor, corresponding member of the ASM, Doctor Habilitated in Medical Sciences, who became the head of this new subdivision named the Chair of Hematology, Oncology and Campaign Therapy. Professor Corcimaru led the Chair until September 2013.

In the period 2013-2017, the management of the Chair of Oncology, Hematology and Radiotherapy is ensured by Ion Mereuţă, PhD in medical sciences, university professor.

In September 2017, the Chair of Oncology, Hematology and Radiotherapy was restructured into two subdivisions: the Chair of Oncology and the Discipline of Hematology (within the Department of Internal Medicine). Thus, in September 2017, Dumitru Sofroni, PhD in medical sciences, university professor, becomes the chief of Oncology Chair.

Over the years, the following specialists have worked at the Oncology Chair: Doctors Habilitated in Medical Sciences, university professors, Nicolae Ghidirim, Ion Mereuță; PhD in medical sciences, Associate Professors Tudor Rotaru, Valentin Martalog, Andrei Ţîbîrnă, Nadejda Corobcean, Sergiu Brenișter; assistant professor, PhD in medical sciences Constantin Popescu; assistant professors Oxana Odobescu, Lilia Bacalîm, Veronica Șveț, Mariana Vârlan, Cristina Cucieru, Victor Șchiopu.

Research professor Iu. Bulat, Associate Professors S. Ştepa, L. Gârleanu; assistant professors  A. Nicorici, P. Tuzlucov, L. Chistruga - collaborators of the Oncological Institute – have been  also involved in the didactic activity as part-time employees.

Oncology and hematology is taught to students of faculties of Medicine No. 1 and No 2, Dentistry, and Preventive Medicine program, to resident doctors of the Residency Faculty as well as to practicing doctors of different specializations (oncologists, family doctors, surgeons) at the Continuing Medical Education Department.

By Order of the Ministry of Health, Labor and Social Protection No. 925 of July 31, 2018, the clinical bases and university clinics have been approved. Thus, the clinical bases of the Chair are: the Oncological Institute, endowed with modern equipment, which contributes substantially to the quality of training, and the following university clinics, which provide both teaching and highly specialized care in oncology: Clinic No. 1 Gynecology, Radiotherapy and Oncopediatrics (Gynecology Unit No. 1, Radiological Oncology Unit No. 2, Radiological Oncology Unit No. 4 (brachytherapy), Oncopediatrics Unit, Consultative Offices); Clinic No. 2 Gynecology (Gynecology Department No. 2); Clinic No. 3 Skin tumors, melanoma and ALM, Mammology (Skin tumors, melanoma and ALM unit, Mammology Unit No. 2); Clinic No. 4 Gastropulmonology (Gastrology Unit, Thoraco-abdominal Unit); Clinic No. 5 Chemotherapy (Department of Medical Oncology No. 1, Department of Medical Oncology No. 2, Department of Medical Oncology No. 3, Day Hospital, consultative offices).
